Bear with me - I didn't grow up here, but Oakland seems pretty awesome.
It should be noted that California from the eyes of a native Midwesterner generally looks like this: crazy rich liberals in San Francisco (with frequent car chases), an entire city of Hollywood stars stuck in Los Angeles traffic, that place the Chargers come from, and a lot of weed, wine, lowriders and epic vistas in between.
